About This Game

Pokemon Christmas 2012 Box Art

Introduction: "Pokemon Christmas 2012" is a fan-made ROM hack of Pokemon Crystal for the Game Boy Color. It is a holiday-themed adventure set in the Kanto region, but with a complete visual overhaul to a winter aesthetic, featuring snow-covered towns, festive decorations, and a Christmas storyline. The game uses the original Generation II engine and sprite work, modified for the seasonal theme.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game begins with a choice of three starter Pokemon: Pikachu, Eevee, or Clefairy, all holding a Berry. It maintains the standard Generation II mechanics, meaning no Physical/Special split, no Fairy type, and no abilities. The difficulty is comparable to the original Crystal, though the altered Pokemon availability can affect team building. It is not specifically designed as a Nuzlocke challenge. Key mechanical changes are primarily aesthetic, such as a winter-themed world map and holiday-specific text and events.

Key Features:

  • A complete Christmas narrative where the player must stop a villainous Team Rocket from ruining the holiday, culminating in a battle against a Santa Claus-like figure.
  • Extensively modified Pokemon encounters, replacing standard Kanto species with Ice-type, Normal-type, and other Pokemon deemed fitting for the season, such as Delibird, Stantler, and Jynx.
  • Holiday-themed items and locations, including receiving key items like Christmas Presents and exploring areas like the Ice Cave which is central to the plot.

The hack is a short, novelty experience focused on its festive theme rather than introducing complex new systems.
