Pokemon Great Defense Box Art

Introduction: "Pokemon Great Defense" is not an official Nintendo or Game Freak title, nor is it a traditional ROM hack. It is a fan-made game created in Adobe Flash, playable in web browsers. The game is a tower defense spin-off, not a traditional RPG adventure. Its visual style uses custom, simplified sprites and a top-down battlefield view typical of the Flash game era.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The core gameplay revolves around placing Pokemon as defensive towers along a path to stop waves of wild Pokemon. You do not choose a starter Pokemon in the traditional sense; instead, you unlock and purchase different Pokemon towers with varying attack types and special abilities. The difficulty is level-based, with each stage presenting stronger and more numerous waves. The mechanics are entirely those of a tower defense game, with no overworld exploration, turn-based battles, or standard Pokemon RPG systems like the Physical/Special split or day/night cycles.

Key Features:

  • A unique tower defense system where each Pokemon species functions as a different tower with specific attacks and evolution upgrades.
  • Resource management focused on earning in-battle currency to deploy and upgrade your Pokemon defenses between waves.
  • A distinct separation from main-series mechanics, offering a purely strategic, real-time challenge instead of a story-driven journey.

As a Flash-based title, its availability is now dependent on preservation projects and Flash emulators.
