About This Game
Introduction: Pokémon Ash Gray is a fan-made ROM hack of Pokémon FireRed for the Game Boy Advance. It is a story-driven hack that attempts to recreate the journey of Ash Ketchum from the original anime series, starting from his first day in Pallet Town. The game uses the standard FireRed visual style and engine, but the map is heavily modified to follow the geography of the Kanto region as depicted in the anime.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The player starts as Ash and receives Pikachu from Professor Oak, mirroring the anime. There is no traditional starter choice. The difficulty is generally low and narrative-focused, designed to follow the show's plot beats rather than provide a challenging battle experience. It uses the Generation III mechanics of FireRed, meaning there is no Physical/Special split for moves and no Fairy type. A key mechanic is the event-based progression; the story advances by completing specific scripted scenes from the anime, often requiring you to be in the right place at a certain time of day.
Key Features:
- Faithful Anime Adaptation: The game follows the plot of the Indigo League and Orange Islands sagues, including specific episodes like the encounter with Pidgeotto and the St. Anne cruise ship.
- Event-Driven Story: Progression is gated by completing iconic anime moments, such as catching Caterpie or participating in the Pokémon League tournament.
- Expanded Pokémon Availability: While focused on Ash's team, many Pokémon from the early seasons are obtainable in locations that match their anime appearances, including Bulbasaur in the Village of the Viridian Forest and Charmander abandoned on a rock.
As a beta, version 3.61 contains unfinished areas and may have scripting bugs that can halt progress if events are triggered out of order.
