About This Game

Pokemon Burning Ruby Box Art

Introduction: Pokemon Burning Ruby is a fan-made ROM hack of the official Pokemon Ruby for the Game Boy Advance. It is not an official release. The game takes place in the original Hoenn region but features a significantly altered narrative and world state, presenting a version of Hoenn ravaged by the unchecked power of Groudon. The visual style uses the standard Generation 3 engine with some custom sprite edits and a generally darker color palette to match its apocalyptic theme.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game offers a unique starter choice: Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip, each holding a specific Berry. It is known for its high difficulty, featuring stronger Gym Leaders and wild Pokemon, making it less beginner-friendly but appealing to challenge seekers. It does not include the Physical/Special split from Generation 4, nor does it add the Fairy type. Key mechanical changes are narrative, not systemic, with the core battle engine remaining that of Generation 3.

Key Features:

  • A post-cataclysmic Hoenn where towns and routes are damaged by eternal sunlight and drought, changing exploration.
  • An expanded storyline focusing on the consequences of Team Magma's success and a new threat from a revived Team Rocket.
  • The inclusion of all Pokemon from Generations 1 through 3, with many found in different locations than the original games.
The hack is a complete narrative overhaul designed for players familiar with the original Hoenn who seek a more mature and challenging adventure.
