About This Game

Pokemon DarkViolet (beta 2) Box Art

Introduction: Pokemon DarkViolet (beta 2) is a fan-made ROM hack of Pokemon FireRed for the Game Boy Advance. It is a retelling of the Kanto journey with a darker, more mature narrative and a visual style that uses the original FireRed engine but with a significantly altered color palette and new sprite work to create a grittier atmosphere.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game retains the classic Kanto starter trio of Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Its difficulty is notably higher than the official games, featuring stronger Gym Leaders and rival battles with full teams, making it a challenging but not explicitly Nuzlocke-designed experience. It does not implement the Physical/Special split from Generation IV or add the Fairy type. Key mechanical changes include a functional day and night cycle and the addition of running shoes that can be used indoors.

Key Features:

  • Expanded and Darker Storyline: The narrative delves deeper into the criminal activities of Team Rocket, presenting a more sinister version of Kanto with morally complex characters and events.
  • Updated Pokemon Roster: The hack expands the available Pokemon beyond the original 151, incorporating select species from Generations II and III into the Kanto region, though the National Dex is not fully implemented.
  • Enhanced Post-Game Content: Beta 2 includes access to the Sevii Islands and features a substantial post-game storyline involving Mewtwo and other legendary Pokemon, providing significantly more content than the base FireRed game.
As a beta version, players may encounter occasional bugs or incomplete features, but it represents a substantial and complete adventure.
