About This Game

Pokemon Fire Red Box Art

Introduction: Pokémon FireRed is an official Game Boy Advance title released in 2004. It is a faithful remake of the 1996 Game Boy game Pokémon Red, set in the Kanto region. The visual style is a significant upgrade from the original, featuring full-color graphics, updated character sprites, and a more detailed world map, while retaining the core top-down perspective of the Game Boy Advance era.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game offers the classic Kanto starter choice between Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Its difficulty is considered standard for the main series, making it accessible for newcomers. It does not include later mechanical overhauls like the Physical/Special split or Fairy type. Key mechanics introduced in this generation include a revamped interface, a new region post-game, and a day/night cycle, though the latter is only active in specific areas added after the main story.

Key Features:

  • Sevii Islands Post-Game: After defeating the Elite Four, players gain access to a new archipelago where they can catch Pokémon from the Johto region, significantly expanding the available roster.
  • Wireless Adapter Support: This version introduced the Wireless Adapter, allowing for cable-free battles and trades with other FireRed and LeafGreen players, a major quality-of-life improvement over link cables.
  • In-Game Tutorials: The game includes an optional, extensive tutorial area called the "Teach TV" and the help system from the menu, designed to onboard players new to the series.
The game is a foundational piece of the third generation and serves as the base for countless modern ROM hacks.
