About This Game
Introduction: This is an official Nintendo and Chunsoft title, not a ROM hack or bootleg. It is the first Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game, released for the Game Boy Advance alongside a companion version, Blue Rescue Team, for the Nintendo DS. The story begins with your character transformed into a Pokémon, setting up a rescue team in a world inhabited solely by Pokémon. The visual style uses 2D sprites on a top-down grid for towns and dungeons, with turn-based exploration in randomly generated dungeons.
Gameplay & Mechanics: You do not choose a starter; instead, your human personality is determined by a quiz, which assigns you one of 16 possible Pokémon, including Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, Meowth, Psyduck, Machop, Cubone, Eevee, and Skitt. You then choose a partner from the remaining pool. The core mechanic is the Mystery Dungeon roguelike system: grid-based, turn-based movement through floors that change layout each visit. There is no Physical/Special split, Fairy type, or Mega Evolution, as it uses Generation III mechanics but outside the standard battle system. Difficulty is inherent to the dungeon-crawling format, with permanent fainting resulting in the loss of all carried items and money if your entire team is defeated.
Key Features:
- Roguelike Dungeon Crawling: Every dungeon floor is procedurally generated, with hunger mechanics, random items, and Monster Houses full of enemies.
- Rescue Team Missions: The core loop involves taking jobs from the bulletin board to rescue Pokémon, deliver items, or escort clients through dungeons.
- Recruitment System: Defeated wild Pokémon can sometimes ask to join your team, allowing you to build a large roster beyond your starter and partner.
