About This Game
Introduction: Pokémon Ruby Destiny: Life of Guardians is a fan-made ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald for the Game Boy Advance. The old version, often called the "Beta" or "v1.0," is a distinct release from its more polished sequel, Reign of Legends. It is set in the Destiny Region, a land shaped by the conflict between the legendary Guardian Pokémon. The visual style uses Emerald's engine with custom tiles, sprites, and maps to create a darker, more mountainous world.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The game offers a choice of three starters: Eevee, Riolu, and Shinx. It is considered a challenging hack, with higher-level wild Pokémon and trainers, making it less forgiving for casual Nuzlocke runs. It does not include the Physical/Special split from Generation IV, nor the Fairy type. It retains Emerald's mechanics like the day/night cycle and Battle Frontier, but with a custom roster of Pokémon spanning Generations I through IV.
Key Features:
- A completely original story centered on the Guardian Pokémon and a villainous team named Team Magma, though with a different role than in the official games.
- An expansive post-game area known as the Guardian Path, which allows players to encounter and capture many legendary Pokémon.
- The inclusion of several "Fakemon" or custom Pokémon, such as the evolution for Farfetch'd and new forms for legendaries, which were later removed or altered in the sequel.
The old version is known for its rough edges, including occasional graphical glitches, progression-halting bugs, and a notoriously difficult final boss sequence. This version of the hack is a foundational piece of ROM hack history that showcases ambitious, if unrefined, storytelling and world-building.
