About This Game

Pokemon Secret Sapphire (beta) Box Art

Introduction: Pokemon Secret Sapphire (Beta) is a fan-made ROM hack of the official Pokemon Emerald for the Game Boy Advance. It is not an official release. The game is set in the Hoenn region, but it features a significantly altered storyline and map layout compared to the original. Visually, it uses the standard Generation III sprite work and tilesets from Emerald, with some custom edits for new characters and events.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game retains the standard Hoenn starter trio of Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip. Its difficulty is notably higher than the base game, with tougher trainer AI, higher-leveled wild Pokemon, and redesigned gym leader teams, making it a challenge for experienced players. Mechanically, it is built on the Emerald engine, so it does not include later-generation updates like the Physical/Special split or the Fairy type. It does feature the day/night cycle and Battle Frontier from Emerald.

Key Features:

  • Altered Storyline and Map: The game presents a new narrative involving Team Magma and Aqua, with different event sequences and dungeon layouts. Some towns and routes are rearranged or blocked off compared to the original Hoenn.
  • Increased Difficulty: Trainers have better Pokemon with more competitive movesets, and wild encounter levels are raised, requiring more strategic team building and grinding.
  • Beta Content and Glitches: As an unfinished beta, the game contains numerous bugs, including soft-locks, graphical errors, and potentially broken progression. Translation issues are also common, as it was primarily distributed in a partially English-patched state.

This hack offers a familiar but more demanding journey through Hoenn for players seeking a stiffer challenge, though its incomplete state means encountering technical problems is expected.
