About This Game

Pokemon Shiny Gold Box Art

Introduction: Pokémon Shiny Gold is a fan-made ROM hack of Pokémon FireRed for the Game Boy Advance. It is a remake of the original Pokémon Gold and Silver games, recreating the Johto region with updated GBA-era graphics and mechanics. The visual style is directly based on FireRed, featuring the same sprite work and color palette.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game begins with the classic Johto starter choice of Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile. It retains the core mechanics of its FireRed base, meaning it does not include the Physical/Special split from Generation IV or the Fairy type. The difficulty is comparable to the official Johto remakes, HeartGold and SoulSilver, but with some increased trainer levels, making it moderately challenging. It includes a day and night cycle, a feature from the original Gold and Silver that was absent in the base FireRed game.

Key Features:

  • Complete Johto and Kanto Regions: The hack faithfully recreates the journey through all sixteen gyms across both regions, culminating in a battle with Red on Mt. Silver.
  • Expanded Pokédex: It features Pokémon from Generations I through III, allowing players to catch species that were not originally in the Johto games, such as Ralts or Trapinch.
  • Quality-of-Life Improvements: The hack incorporates features from later games, including the Running Shoes being usable indoors and the addition of the Vs. Seeker for rematching trainers.

While a notable early attempt at a Johto remake for the GBA, later hacks like Liquid Crystal would build upon its foundation with more polish and features.
