About This Game
Introduction: Oak Vs Gio is a ROM hack of the official Pokemon Yellow for the original Game Boy, playable on the Game Boy Color hardware. It is not an official release. The hack reimagines the Kanto region's story, casting the player in a conflict between Professor Oak and the villainous Team Rocket leader, Giovanni. Visually, it retains the original Game Boy's monochrome graphics and sprite work from Pokemon Yellow, with no enhancements for GBC color palettes.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The game begins with a choice of one starter Pokemon from the original Kanto trio: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. It does not feature the Physical/Special split, Fairy type, Mega Evolution, or a day/night cycle, as it is based on the Generation I engine. The difficulty is generally similar to the base game, though narrative changes can alter trainer rosters. It is not specifically designed as a Nuzlocke challenge but can be played as one. Key mechanical changes are limited, focusing more on story and character swaps than core system overhauls.
Key Features:
- Altered Storyline and Roles: Professor Oak and Giovanni have switched narrative positions, with Oak taking a more antagonistic role and Giovanni potentially acting as an ally, fundamentally changing the context of the Kanto journey.
- Character and Dialogue Swaps: Many character sprites and dialogues are replaced to fit the new narrative, meaning familiar characters like gym leaders or rivals may have unexpected roles or teams.
- Limited Engine Changes: As a hack of the original Yellow, it inherits all its bugs and mechanics, including the original Special stat and critical hit formulas, with no additions like reusable TMs or running shoes indoors.
