About This Game

Pokemon Trading Card Game Box Art

Introduction: This is an official Nintendo and Hudson Soft game for the Game Boy Color, released in 1998 in Japan and 2000 internationally. It is a direct adaptation of the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game, set in a world where players collect and battle with cards instead of creatures. The story follows your journey to defeat the eight Club Masters and recover the legendary Legendary Pokémon Cards. The visual style uses the Game Boy Color's palette to render cards and characters in a bright, menu-driven interface distinct from the main RPG series.

Gameplay & Mechanics: Instead of choosing a starter Pokémon, you choose one of three starter decks: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. The game is a faithful digital card game, with mechanics based on the Base Set, Jungle, and Fossil expansions. Difficulty is inherent to deck building and strategy, not a traditional RPG level curve. Key mechanics include managing Energy cards, evolving Basic Pokémon, and using Trainer cards. There is no Physical/Special split, Fairy type, or day/night cycle, as these are card game mechanics, not RPG ones.

Key Features:

  • Faithful card game simulation with over 200 cards from the early TCG sets to collect and build decks with.
  • A full single-player campaign against Club Masters and the final Grand Masters, culminating in four exclusive Legendary Pokémon Cards not found in the physical game.
  • A robust Link Cable mode for head-to-head battles, allowing players to trade cards and test decks against friends.
This game stands as a complete and polished digital version of the early Pokémon TCG, offering a deep strategic experience separate from the core RPG adventures.
