About This Game
Introduction: Pokémon Crystal is an official Game Boy Color title, serving as the enhanced third version of the second generation. It is set in the Johto region, with the player later traveling to Kanto. The game uses the same sprite-based visual style as Gold and Silver but with added color enhancements and animated Pokémon sprites during battle.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The player chooses one of three starter Pokémon: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile. The game's difficulty is moderate, with a notable spike in the post-game Kanto segment, and its structure is considered Nuzlocke-friendly due to varied encounter areas. The core mechanical addition is a real-time day and night cycle, which affects Pokémon encounters and certain events. The Physical/Special split based on move type did not exist yet; that division was still tied to the move's elemental type. The Fairy type and Mega Evolution were not introduced until later generations.
Key Features:
- First playable female protagonist in the series.
- Animated Pokémon sprites for all 251 creatures, a first for the main series.
- The Battle Tower facility, introducing a new post-game challenge.
- A dedicated subplot involving the Legendary Pokémon Suicune.
- The Odd Egg from the Day-Care, which has a high chance of hatching a Shiny Pokémon.
