About This Game

Pokemon Brown 2014 Box Art

Introduction: Pokemon Brown 2014 is a fan-made ROM hack of the original Pokemon Red for the Game Boy. It is an updated and expanded version of the seminal 2004 hack, Pokemon Brown, created by Koolboyman. The game is set in the new region of Rijon, which connects to the familiar Kanto in its post-game. The visual style retains the classic monochrome Game Boy aesthetic but with entirely new maps, sprites, and tiles.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game begins with a choice of three starters: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Its difficulty is higher than the official Generation I games, featuring tougher Gym Leaders and wild Pokemon with better movesets, making it a solid choice for players seeking a challenge. Mechanically, it is built on the Generation I engine, so it lacks the Physical/Special split, Fairy type, and other modern additions. However, it introduces many new moves and over 100 Pokemon from Generations I, II, and III, integrated into the Rijon and Kanto dex. A day and night cycle is present, affecting which Pokemon appear.

Key Features:

  • A completely original region with eight new Gyms, a new villainous team (Team R), and a storyline that continues into the post-game Kanto adventure.
  • Numerous quality-of-life improvements for a Gen I hack, including the ability to run, a working PC item storage system, and reusable TMs.
  • Unique locations and puzzles, such as the Merson Cave with its darkness mechanic and the Seashore City gym that requires navigating a current.
This hack is considered a foundational piece of the ROM hacking community and offers a substantial, classic-style adventure.
