About This Game

Pokemon Green Box Art

Introduction: This is the official Japanese-exclusive release that, alongside Pokémon Red, launched the franchise on the Game Boy in 1996. It is set in the Kanto region and uses the original monochrome sprite style. The international releases of Pokémon Blue and Red were based on an updated version of this game's code.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The player chooses one of three starter Pokémon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. The difficulty is standard for Generation I, with notable AI and stat calculation quirks that can make battles unpredictable. It lacks the modern Physical/Special split, and types like Dark and Steel do not exist. The game features the original 151 Pokémon, with some, like Vulpix and Meowth, being version exclusives to Green.

Key Features:

  • The original version-exclusive Pokémon roster, differing from the international Red and Blue.
  • Distinct world map sprite designs, most famously for Venusaur and other monsters, which were redesigned for later releases.
  • Contains the classic Generation I mechanics and bugs, such as the Focus Energy glitch and MissingNo. exploit.
The game is a foundational piece of history, showcasing the series' origins with all its original charm and technical idiosyncrasies.
