About This Game
Introduction: Pokémon HeartGold is an official Nintendo DS remake of the 1999 Game Boy Color title Pokémon Gold. It revisits the Johto region, expanding the original story and world with the graphical and mechanical standards of the Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum era. The game retains the classic top-down perspective but with fully animated Pokémon sprites and a more detailed, colorful overworld.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The player begins in New Bark Town with a choice of the classic Johto starters: Chikorita (Grass), Cyndaquil (Fire), or Totodile (Water). The game incorporates the Physical/Special split introduced in Generation IV, fundamentally changing move effectiveness. Its difficulty is moderate, with a significant post-game challenge, and its structure is considered very Nuzlocke-friendly due to the large variety of Pokémon available across two full regions. Key mechanics include a full day/night cycle and the return of Pokémon following the player, a feature absent since Pokémon Yellow.
Key Features:
- Two Full Regions: After conquering the eight Johto Gyms and the Pokémon League, the player gains access to the Kanto region from the first generation, complete with its own eight Gyms to challenge.
- Pokéwalker Peripheral: The game bundled a pedometer device that allowed players to transfer a Pokémon to it, earn experience and items by walking, and encounter wild Pokémon in specific routes.
- Enhanced Battle Frontier: The post-game includes the Battle Frontier from Pokémon Platinum, offering a suite of high-level battle facilities far more extensive than the original Pokémon Gold's Battle Tower.
