About This Game
Introduction: Pokémon SoulSilver is an official Nintendo DS remake of the 1999 Game Boy Color title Pokémon Silver. It is paired with Pokémon HeartGold. The game is set in the Johto region, with the player later gaining access to the Kanto region from the original games. It uses the enhanced sprite-based visual style of the DS Pokémon era, with the gameplay displayed on the bottom screen and menus or a key item on the top.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The player chooses one of three starter Pokémon: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile. The game retains the Physical/Special split introduced in Generation IV, which fundamentally changed move categorization. It features a full day/night cycle and day-of-the-week events. The difficulty is moderate, with a significant post-game, making it popular for Nuzlocke challenges. A key mechanic is the Pokémon following the player in the overworld, with sprites for all 493 available Pokémon.
Key Features:
- Two Regions in One Game: After defeating the Johto Pokémon League, the entire Kanto region from Pokémon Red and Blue opens up for exploration, culminating in a battle against the original protagonist, Red.
- The Pokéathlon Dome: A replacement for Contests, this minigame facility uses the touch screen for athletic competitions that test a Pokémon's stats in real-time events.
- The Pokéwalker Peripheral: The game bundled with a pedometer device. Players could transfer a Pokémon to it to gain experience, find items, and encounter wild Pokémon by walking in real life.
This title is often cited as one of the most content-rich entries in the series due to its dual-region structure and extensive post-game.
