About This Game
Introduction: Pokémon HeartGold Version is an official Nintendo DS remake of the 1999 Game Boy Color title Pokémon Gold. It is a core series game from Generation IV, alongside Pokémon SoulSilver. The game is set in the Johto region, with the player's journey later expanding to include the original Kanto region from the first games. It uses the same sprite-based, top-down visual style as other DS-era Pokémon titles like Diamond and Pearl, but with significant graphical enhancements over its original version.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The player begins by choosing one of three starter Pokémon from Professor Elm: Chikorita (Grass), Cyndaquil (Fire), or Totodile (Water). The game incorporates the Physical/Special split introduced in Generation IV, which fundamentally changed move categorization. It features a real-time day and night cycle and days of the week, affecting which Pokémon appear and certain in-game events. The difficulty curve is considered moderate, with a notable spike at the Elite Four, and its expansive post-game content makes it popular for Nuzlocke challenges.
Key Features:
- The Pokéwalker accessory, a pedometer that allowed players to transfer a Pokémon to a physical device to gain experience and find items while walking.
- Your lead Pokémon follows behind you on the overworld, a feature first introduced in Pokémon Yellow and not seen again until these remakes.
- An extensive post-game that includes the entire Kanto region to explore, 16 Gym Leaders to battle, and a final showdown with Red on Mt. Silver.
