About This Game

Pokemon - Heart Gold (JP) Box Art

Introduction: This is an official Nintendo DS game, a remake of the 1999 Game Boy Color title Pokemon Gold. It is part of the fourth generation of Pokemon games, alongside Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. The game is set in the Johto region, with the player's journey later expanding to include the original Kanto region from the first games. It uses a top-down 2D sprite-based visual style, with 3D effects used for certain buildings and the overworld Pokemon following feature.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The player chooses one of three starter Pokemon from Professor Elm: Chikorita (Grass), Cyndaquil (Fire), or Totodile (Water). The game retains the Physical/Special split introduced in Generation IV, which redefined how move types interact with a Pokemon's stats. It features a real-time day/night cycle and day-of-the-week events that affect which Pokemon appear. The difficulty curve is considered moderate, with a significant post-game challenge, making it a popular choice for standard and Nuzlocke playthroughs.

Key Features:

  • Pokemon Following the Player: Your first Pokemon in the party walks behind you on the overworld, a feature expanded from Pokemon Yellow.
  • Two Full Regions to Explore: After defeating the Johto Pokemon League, the entire Kanto region from the first generation opens up for exploration, culminating in a battle against the original protagonist, Red, on Mt. Silver.
  • The Pokéathlon: A unique minigame dome replacing the Contests from other games, where Pokemon compete in athletic events using their stats in real-time competitions.
This remake is widely regarded as a definitive version of the Johto experience, successfully modernizing its core while preserving its expansive scope.
