About This Game

Pokemon - HeartGold Version (v10) (EU) Box Art

Introduction: This is the official European version of Pokémon HeartGold Version, a 2009 Nintendo DS remake of the 1999 Game Boy Color game Pokémon Gold. It is an official second-party title developed by Game Freak. The game is set in the Johto region, with the Kanto region becoming accessible after the main story. It uses the DS's graphical capabilities to present a top-down 2D world with 3D effects in battles and certain areas, closely following the visual style of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The player chooses one of three starter Pokémon from Professor Elm: Chikorita (Grass), Cyndaquil (Fire), or Totodile (Water). The game incorporates the Physical/Special split introduced in Generation IV, which fundamentally changed move categorization. It includes a real-time day and night cycle and days of the week with specific events. The difficulty is considered moderate and well-suited for standard playthroughs or self-imposed challenges like Nuzlockes, due to its balanced progression and expansive post-game. A key mechanical addition is the Pokéathlon, a series of athletic mini-games.

Key Features:

  • Pokémon Follow the Player: Your first Pokémon in the party follows behind your character sprite in the overworld, a feature highly praised by fans.
  • Expanded Post-Game: After defeating the Johto Pokémon League, the entire Kanto region from the first generation opens up, featuring eight more Gyms and a final battle against Red on Mt. Silver.
  • Pokéwalker Peripheral: The game was bundled with a pedometer device called the Pokéwalker, which allowed players to transfer a Pokémon to it, gain experience, find items, and encounter wild Pokémon by walking in real life.
This version represents one of the most content-rich and polished experiences in the mainline Pokémon series.
