About This Game

Pokemon Red : Proud Eyes (v4.0) Box Art

Introduction: Pokemon Red: Proud Eyes (v4.0) is a fan-made ROM hack of the original Pokemon Red Version for the Game Boy. It is not an official release or a bootleg. The hack takes place in the familiar Kanto region but introduces a completely rewritten narrative and dialogue. Visually, it retains the original Game Boy's monochrome graphics and sprite style, with some minor edits to character sprites and overworld tiles.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game offers a choice of three starter Pokemon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. It is known for a significantly increased difficulty level, featuring stronger Gym Leader teams, higher-level wild Pokemon, and more strategic AI, making it a challenging experience for veterans. Mechanically, it remains faithful to Generation I rules; there is no Physical/Special split, no Fairy type, and no day/night cycle. The core battle and stat systems are unchanged from the base Pokemon Red ROM.

Key Features:

  • A completely rewritten story with new dialogue, giving characters like Professor Oak and Rival Blue more defined personalities and motivations.
  • Increased difficulty with revamped trainer teams, including Gym Leaders who use full teams of six Pokemon and employ more competitive strategies.
  • The inclusion of all 151 original Pokemon, with some, like Mew, being made obtainable through in-game events without the need for glitches.
The hack is a focused effort to provide a more mature narrative and a stiffer challenge within the technical confines of the original Game Boy hardware.
