About This Game

Pokemon Complex Crystal (beta 1.3) Box Art

Introduction: Pokémon Complex Crystal is a fan-made ROM hack of the official Game Boy Color game Pokémon Crystal. It is set in the Johto and Kanto regions, but with a drastically altered narrative and world. The visual style retains the original GBC aesthetic but features new maps, character sprites, and a darker, more complex storyline.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack does not offer traditional starter Pokémon from Professor Elm. Instead, the player's journey begins under unique circumstances, often involving a Ralts or other unconventional choices dictated by the plot. The difficulty is significantly increased, with tougher trainers, revised level curves, and strategic enemy teams, making it less Nuzlocke-friendly without careful planning. It does not implement the Physical/Special split or the Fairy type, remaining true to the Generation II engine, but it does utilize the day/night cycle from the base game. Key mechanical changes include a completely rewritten storyline and extensive scripting alterations.

Key Features:

  • A completely original, non-linear story that departs from the traditional Gym challenge, focusing on psychological and philosophical themes.
  • Access to all 251 Pokémon from the first two generations, with many available earlier and in different locations than in the official games.
  • Heavily modified maps for towns, routes, and dungeons, alongside new characters and rival figures that are integral to the complex narrative.
The beta 1.3 version represents a substantial but incomplete build of the hack, containing the full main story but potentially lacking some post-game content or having minor scripting bugs.
