About This Game

Pokemon Rusty Gold (hack) Box Art

Introduction: Pokémon Rusty Gold is a fan-made ROM hack of the Game Boy Color title Pokémon Gold. It is set in the original Johto region but features a completely new story, characters, and visual overhaul. The game uses a distinct, often darker color palette and new sprite work to create a different atmosphere from the official release.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack retains the core mechanics of Generation II, meaning there is no Physical/Special split, no Fairy type, and no Mega Evolution. The day/night cycle from the original Gold is present. The difficulty is notably increased, with tougher Gym Leaders and wild Pokémon, making it less forgiving for casual play but appealing to those seeking a challenge. Your starter Pokémon is a fixed Pikachu, which is a significant departure from the traditional Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile choice.

Key Features:

  • A completely rewritten narrative where you play as a character named Rusty, with a new rival and a story focused on the criminal Team Rocket.
  • An expanded Pokédex that includes many Pokémon from the later Kanto and Johto games not originally in Gold, such as Houndour and Larvitar, available earlier in the adventure.
  • Numerous map edits, including redesigned towns, dungeons, and routes, alongside revised trainer teams that provide a fresh experience for veterans of the Johto region.
The hack is known for its complete graphical overhaul and increased difficulty, offering a familiar region with a new perspective.
