About This Game

Pokemon Thunder Yellow Box Art

Introduction: Pokemon Thunder Yellow is a fan-made ROM hack of the official Pokemon FireRed for the Game Boy Advance, not the Game Boy Color. It is set in the Kanto region and uses the enhanced visual style of the GBA's Generation 3 engine, featuring updated color palettes and sprite work compared to the original Game Boy games.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack follows the story of Pokemon Yellow, where your starter is a Pikachu that follows you. It incorporates the full National Pokedex up to Generation 3, allowing you to catch Pokemon from Johto and Hoenn in the Kanto region. The game uses the standard FireRed mechanics, meaning it does not have the Physical/Special split from Generation 4, nor the Fairy type. The difficulty is increased with stronger trainer teams and revised wild Pokemon encounters, making it more challenging than the base game but not specifically designed as a Nuzlocke hack.

Key Features:

  • Expanded Pokedex and Encounters, integrating over 380 Pokemon from the first three generations into Kanto's routes and caves.
  • Increased Difficulty with Gym Leaders and the Elite Four featuring higher-level teams with better type coverage and held items.
  • Quality-of-Life Improvements from FireRed, such as reusable TMs, the Vs. Seeker for rematches, and running shoes that work indoors.
The game provides a familiar Kanto journey with a significantly broader team-building roster and a steeper challenge curve.
