About This Game
Introduction: Pokemon Yellow Upgrade is a fan-made ROM hack of the official Pokemon Yellow Version for the original Game Boy. It is designed to run on Game Boy Color hardware, utilizing its enhanced color palette. The hack retains the core Kanto region story from the original game, where you follow the journey of Red, but with numerous quality-of-life and content expansions. The visual style is the familiar sprite work of Generation I, but with the full, richer colorization possible on the Game Boy Color.
Gameplay & Mechanics: Unlike the original Yellow, which forces you to start with Pikachu, this hack offers a choice of the three classic Kanto starters: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. The difficulty is moderately increased through stronger trainer teams and adjusted level curves, making it more challenging than the base game but not designed as a dedicated Nuzlocke hack. It does not implement later-generation mechanics like the Physical/Special split or the Fairy type. Key mechanical changes include the addition of a proper day and night cycle, which affects certain Pokemon encounters, and the ability to run using the Select button.
Key Features:
- Expanded Pokedex featuring all 251 Pokemon from Generations I and II, allowing you to catch Johto species like Tyranitar and Scizor in Kanto.
- Reusable TMs, a modern convenience backported to the Gen I engine, removing the single-use limitation on Technical Machines.
- Post-Game Content including a visit to the Sevii Islands from FireRed/LeafGreen and a final battle against Red on Mt. Silver.
