About This Game
Introduction: Oak's Dream 2 is a fan-made ROM hack of the original Pokemon Red for the Game Boy. It is a direct sequel to the hacker's first project, Oak's Dream, and continues the story in the custom region of Kanto, albeit with significant alterations to the map and narrative. The visual style remains faithful to the 8-bit Generation I aesthetic, using the original tiles and sprites with some palette changes.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The game begins with a choice of the three classic Kanto starters: Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. The difficulty is notably higher than the official Red version, featuring stronger Gym Leader teams and a more aggressive rival, making it less forgiving for casual Nuzlocke runs. Mechanically, it operates on the Generation I engine, so it lacks the Physical/Special split, Fairy type, and any modern quality-of-life features. Key changes are narrative and structural, not systemic.
Key Features:
- A completely rewritten story where Professor Oak tasks you with a new, personal mission that recontextualizes the journey through Kanto.
- Extensively redesigned world map with new town layouts, dungeon puzzles, and altered routes that require re-exploration.
- An expanded post-game episode that continues the story after the initial Elite Four challenge, adding several hours of new content.
As a hack of the original Red version, it inherits the classic mechanics and limitations of that generation, offering a familiar but restructured challenge for veteran players.
