About This Game

Pikamon (pokemon red hack) Box Art

Introduction: Pikamon is a bootleg Game Boy cartridge, not a ROM hack of Pokemon Red. It is a poorly translated and modified version of the Japanese game Keitai Denjuu Telefang, a monster-collecting RPG unrelated to Pokemon. The setting is a generic world with towns and routes, but the story is incoherent due to the broken English translation. The visual style uses original Telefang sprites, which are distinct from Pokemon's art style, leading to many creatures being mislabeled with Pokemon names.

Gameplay & Mechanics: You do not choose a starter Pokemon; you begin with a creature called Shigeki, which is referred to as Pikachu in this version. The difficulty is erratic, with unbalanced enemy stats and a confusing battle system based on calling monsters via a cell phone. Key Pokemon mechanics like types, PP, and standard evolution are absent or broken. The game lacks the Physical/Special split, Fairy type, and any modern Pokemon engine changes, as it runs on a completely different, glitchy engine.

Key Features:

  • Infamous "Pokemon" names for non-Pokemon creatures, such as Pikachu for Shigeki and Dokukrab for a crab monster.
  • A battle system where you "call" monsters to fight for you, which is often non-functional due to translation errors and bugs.
  • Extensive glitches, including corrupted text, soft locks, and the potential to delete save data, making it notoriously unstable.
This bootleg is primarily known for its poor quality and humorous mistranslations rather than for offering a coherent gameplay experience.
