About This Game

Pokemon Aqua (red hack) Box Art

Introduction: Pokémon Aqua is a ROM hack of the Game Boy Advance game Pokémon FireRed. It is not an official title. The hack takes place in the new Aqua Region, a collection of islands, and retains the visual style and engine of its base game, meaning it is a Generation 3 title played on GBA hardware, not the original Game Boy.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack offers a choice of three starter Pokémon: Totodile, Cyndaquil, and Chikorita, importing these from Generation 2. It does not implement the Physical/Special split from Generation 4, nor does it add the Fairy type. The difficulty is considered moderate, with a higher-level curve than the original FireRed, making it more challenging for a standard playthrough but not specifically designed as a Nuzlocke hack. Key mechanical changes include the addition of a day and night cycle and the ability to run indoors.

Key Features:

  • A completely new story and region with original characters, including new Gym Leaders and a rival.
  • An expanded Pokédex featuring Pokémon from Generations 1, 2, and 3, with many available earlier in the adventure.
  • Quality-of-life improvements from later games, such as reusable TMs and the inclusion of the Vs. Seeker for rematching trainers.

This hack provides a traditional but expanded journey for players familiar with the FireRed framework.
