About This Game

Pokemon Blue Upgrade Box Art

Introduction: Pokémon Blue Upgrade is a fan-made ROM hack of the original Pokémon Blue Version for the Game Boy. It is not an official release or a bootleg. The hack retains the core Kanto region and the original Game Boy monochrome visual style, but it is extensively modified to feel like a new game with updated content and increased difficulty.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game begins with a choice of three starter Pokémon: Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur. However, the core gameplay loop is significantly harder than the original. Enemy trainers have higher-level Pokémon with improved movesets, making it a challenge often considered suitable for players seeking a Nuzlocke run. Mechanically, it remains faithful to Generation I rules; it does not include the Physical/Special split, Fairy type, or a day/night cycle. The changes are focused on roster and difficulty.

Key Features:

  • Expanded Pokémon Roster: The hack integrates many Pokémon from Generations II and III into the Kanto region, allowing players to catch species like Houndour, Larvitar, and Bagon long before they appeared in official games.
  • Increased Difficulty: Gym Leaders, the Elite Four, and rival battles feature fully evolved teams with competitive movesets, requiring strategic planning and grinding.
  • Revised Game Progression: The hack alters item locations, wild Pokémon encounters, and even some story events, creating a familiar but distinctly new path through Kanto.

This hack is designed for players who have mastered the original Game Boy titles and want a more demanding adventure with a wider variety of Pokémon to use.
