About This Game

Pokemon Breeders Edition (blue) Box Art

Introduction: "Pokemon Breeders Edition (blue)" is a fan-made ROM hack of the official Pokemon FireRed. It is not an official Nintendo release. The game is set in the Kanto region, but the story is heavily altered to focus on the profession of Pokemon breeding. The visual style uses the standard FireRed engine and tilesets, so it retains the look of a Generation 3 Game Boy Advance title, not an original Game Boy game.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The core mechanic is a revamped breeding system that is more central to progression than battling Gyms. You do not choose a traditional starter like Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle; instead, you begin with a Pichu and must breed Pokemon to obtain new species and fulfill client requests. The difficulty is moderate but non-standard, as success depends more on understanding breeding mechanics and egg moves than on building a combat-optimized team. The hack retains the original FireRed mechanics, meaning it does not include the Physical/Special split, the Fairy type, or Mega Evolution.

Key Features:

  • A completely redesigned story where the player's goal is to become a master breeder by completing jobs for NPCs around Kanto.
  • An expanded and more complex breeding system that involves specific items, locations, and inherited moves to create desired Pokemon.
  • Altered wild Pokemon encounters and availability to support the breeding theme, with many species only obtainable through eggs.
The game provides a distinct alternative to the standard Gym challenge by making Pokemon creation the primary objective.
