About This Game

Pokemon II (red hack) Box Art

Introduction: "Pokemon II (red hack)" is a fan-made ROM hack of the original Pokemon Red for the Game Boy. It is not an official sequel. The game is set in the familiar Kanto region and retains the original's monochrome visual style and tile-based graphics, but with significant alterations to its roster and progression.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack replaces the original starter trio. Players choose from Pikachu, Clefairy, or Jigglypuff. The difficulty is notably higher than the base game, featuring stronger and more diverse trainer teams, which can make it challenging for a casual playthrough but potentially suitable for a Nuzlocke run. It does not include modern mechanics like the Physical/Special split or the Fairy type, operating strictly on the Generation I engine with its attendant bugs and logic.

Key Features:

  • Expanded Pokemon Roster: The hack integrates many Pokemon from Generation II (Gold/Silver), such as Houndour, Larvitar, and Skarmory, into the Kanto wild encounters and trainer teams.
  • Increased Difficulty: Gym Leaders, the Elite Four, and rival battles feature fully evolved teams with more strategic type coverage, demanding better team preparation from the player.
  • Altered Progression and Items: Key item locations and some dungeon layouts are changed, and certain TMs like Ice Beam and Thunderbolt are made available earlier to accommodate the harder battles.

This hack offers a more demanding take on the classic Kanto journey by blending Generation I and II Pokemon.
