About This Game

Pokemon Puzzle League (E) Box Art

Introduction: This is an official Nintendo 64 puzzle game released in 2000. It is not a traditional RPG but a localized version of the Japanese title Panel de Pon, reskinned with characters and themes from the Pokemon: The Johto Journeys anime season. The visual style uses 3D character models and environments from the anime, with 2D puzzle gameplay.

Gameplay & Mechanics: There are no Starter Pokemon, wild encounters, or a region to explore. The core gameplay is a competitive falling-block puzzle game. Players must match three or more colored blocks in a row or column to clear them from the grid, with the goal of overwhelming the opponent's screen. The game features a 2D mode and a challenging 3D cylindrical mode that wraps the puzzle board around. It is not an RPG, so concepts like Nuzlocke runs, the Physical/Special split, or Mega Evolution do not apply. The difficulty is based on puzzle speed and AI opponent skill.

Key Features:

  • Anime Voice Cast and Story Mode: Features the original English voice actors from the anime in a story mode where you face rivals like Gary Oak and Team Rocket.
  • 3D Cylinder Puzzle Mode: A unique and difficult mode where the puzzle grid wraps around a cylinder, requiring new strategic thinking.
  • Comprehensive Challenge Modes: Includes a Stadium-like Gym Leader Castle, a relentless Endless mode, and a Time Attack mode for score chasing.
The game is a well-regarded and challenging official spin-off that successfully adapted the Panel de Pon formula to the Pokemon universe.
