About This Game

Pokemon Dash Box Art

Introduction: Pokémon Dash is an official spin-off title released for the Nintendo DS in 2004 in Japan and 2005 internationally. It is not a traditional RPG but a racing game, developed by Ambrella. The story setting is the Pokémon Island, a location created for this game, and the visual style utilizes a top-down 2D perspective for the main gameplay, with 3D models for certain Pokémon.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The player controls Pikachu exclusively, racing against other Pokémon across various island terrains. There is no choice of starter Pokémon, and the game's difficulty stems from mastering the touch-screen controls to draw a path for Pikachu to run. It is not an RPG and therefore not designed for concepts like Nuzlocke runs. The core mechanic is entirely built around the DS's touch screen and stylus for navigation, with the player tapping balloons to change Pikachu's direction and using items found on the course.

Key Features:

  • Touch-Screen Racing: The entire game is controlled using the stylus to draw Pikachu's route, a novel use of the DS hardware at launch.
  • Multiplayer Modes: The game supported single-cartridge download play for up to six players, a significant feature for early DS software.
  • Course Variety: Races take place across different environmental zones on Pokémon Island, including grass, desert, and water, each affecting movement.
It was one of the first Pokémon titles to demonstrate the potential of the Nintendo DS's unique interface.
