About This Game
Introduction: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness is an official Nintendo DS title released in 2008, part of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon spin-off series. It is a paired release with Explorers of Time, both sharing the same core game. The story is set in a world populated solely by Pokémon, where the player, transformed into a Pokémon, joins an exploration guild to investigate temporal anomalies threatening the land. The visual style uses 2D sprites in top-down, grid-based dungeons.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The game begins with a personality quiz to determine your starter Pokémon from a pool including Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip. You then choose a partner from the remaining starters. The core gameplay is a roguelike dungeon crawler, not a traditional Pokémon RPG, making standard Nuzlocke rules inapplicable. Key mechanics include procedurally generated dungeons, turn-based movement and combat, and the use of items and IQ Skills for your team. It does not feature mechanics from the main series like the Physical/Special split or Mega Evolution.
Key Features:
- An extensive, character-driven story focusing on themes of time, fate, and friendship, which is notably deeper than many main series titles.
- The Sentinel and Spinda's Café systems for managing rescued Pokémon and creating useful items for dungeon exploration.
- A massive post-game storyline that significantly expands the game's content, including the challenging Zero Isle dungeons and the ability to recruit legendary Pokémon like Dialga.
