About This Game
Introduction: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time is an official Nintendo DS title released in 2007 as part of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon spin-off series. The game is a direct counterpart to Explorers of Darkness, with the pair sharing the same core story and mechanics. The setting is not a traditional human-inhabited region but a world populated solely by Pokémon, where the player's character, a human transformed into a Pokémon, joins an exploration guild. The visual style uses 2D sprites in isometric, procedurally generated dungeons.
Gameplay & Mechanics: Gameplay is a dungeon-crawling roguelike. At the start, a personality quiz determines your Pokémon form from a pool of 16 starters, including Chimchar, Piplup, Turtwig, Riolu, and Shinx. You then choose a partner from the remaining pool. The core loop involves forming teams, accepting jobs, and exploring randomly generated dungeons where movement and attacks are turn-based. The difficulty is notably higher than mainline games, with permanent fainting resulting in the loss of all items and money if the entire party wipes, making it less suited for standard Nuzlocke rules. It does not feature mechanics from the main series like the Physical/Special split or Fairy type, as it operates on its own unique stat and type system.
Key Features:
- A story-driven narrative focusing on time travel, with a more serious and emotional plot than the main series games of its era.
- The core Mystery Dungeon mechanics: hunger management, item and move usage limited by PP, and the risk of losing everything upon a total party knockout.
- Extensive post-game content, including the lengthy Marine Resort dungeon and the ability to recruit nearly every Pokémon from Generations I-IV, including legendary Pokémon.
