About This Game

POKEMON PEARL VERSION (V1.13) (EU) Box Art

Introduction: This is the official European release of Pokémon Pearl Version for the Nintendo DS, version 1.13. It is one half of the core Generation IV titles, alongside Pokémon Diamond. The game is set in the Sinnoh region, a northern-inspired land featuring Mt. Coronet at its center. The visual style utilizes the DS's capabilities for 3D environments and sprite-based characters, with a distinct use of the lower screen for the Pokétch multi-function watch.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The player chooses one of three starter Pokémon: the Fire-type Chimchar, the Water-type Piplup, or the Grass-type Turtwig. The game introduced the foundational Physical/Special split, where moves are now categorized by their damage type rather than their elemental type. This generation's difficulty is considered moderate, with a notable spike in the late-game Elite Four levels. It is not inherently Nuzlocke-friendly due to limited early-game encounter variety. Key mechanics include a full day/night cycle affecting wild encounters, the debut of online connectivity via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and the addition of the Pokémon Platinum expansion's Battle Frontier in the post-game.

Key Features:

  • The debut of 107 new Pokémon, including the legendary Dialga and Palkia, and the introduction of evolutions for previous-generation Pokémon like Tangrowth and Mamoswine.
  • Full integration of the touch screen via the Pokétch, which provided apps for tracking Pokémon friendship, a step counter, and a move-type matchup checker.
  • The underground mining minigame for finding fossils, evolution stones, and secret bases, which also supported local multiplayer.
The European version 1.13 includes standard localization and minor bug fixes from earlier releases.
