About This Game

Pokemon Ranger - Batonnage (J) Box Art

Introduction: This is an official Nintendo DS game, the second main entry in the Pokémon Ranger spin-off series. The story is set in the Almia region, a separate land from the main series, and the visual style uses the DS's 3D capabilities for environments while characters and Pokémon are 2D sprites. The game is a direct sequel to the original Pokémon Ranger.

Gameplay & Mechanics: You do not choose a starter Pokémon in the traditional sense. Instead, you begin with a partner Pokémon, Minun or Plusle, which is used to assist in capturing wild Pokémon. The core mechanic is using the DS stylus to draw loops, called "Capture Lines," around wild Pokémon to befriend them temporarily. There is no standard battle system, leveling, or Pokémon storage. Difficulty is moderate and increases with more complex boss encounters, but it is not designed for Nuzlocke rules. The game does not incorporate mechanics like the Physical/Special split or Mega Evolution, as it exists outside the main series' generational framework.

Key Features:

  • Expanded Ranger arsenal with new Capture Styler models and Field Moves for solving environmental puzzles.
  • A mission-based structure where you complete tasks for the Ranger Union to increase your rank and unlock new areas.
  • The "Poké Assist" system, where befriended wild Pokémon can use their abilities once to aid in capturing other, often more powerful, targets.
The game's story involves investigating the mysterious group Team Dim Sun and their activities disrupting the natural order in Almia. Your progression is tied directly to your Ranger Rank, which gates access to new missions and areas of the region. This is a complete, polished official title with no notable bugs or translation issues in its original Japanese release.
