About This Game

Pokemon Ranger - Guardian Signs (EU) Box Art

Introduction: Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs is an official spin-off title for the Nintendo DS, released in 2010. It is the third and final game in the Pokémon Ranger series. The story is set in the Oblivia region, a tropical archipelago, and follows a new Ranger as they work to stop the Pokémon Pinchers and investigate ancient ruins. The visual style uses 2D sprites on 3D-rendered environments, similar to its predecessors.

Gameplay & Mechanics: Unlike main series games, you do not catch Pokémon with Poké Balls or have traditional starter choices. Instead, you befriend wild Pokémon temporarily using the DS stylus to draw loops around them on the touch screen. The game's difficulty is moderate, focused more on puzzle-solving and action sequences than complex battling. It does not incorporate mechanics from the main series like the Physical/Special split, Fairy type, or Mega Evolution. The core mechanic is the Capture Styler, which gains power and new abilities as you progress.

Key Features:

  • Partner Pokémon and Signs: You can call upon specific Partner Pokémon to use field abilities like Cut or Surf. A major new feature is the use of ancient "Signs" to summon powerful Ranger Signs, which allow two Pokémon to combine their powers for enhanced effects.
  • Multiplayer Missions: The game includes both local and online cooperative missions for two players, a first for the series. These missions involve completing specific tasks within a time limit.
  • Past and Present Gameplay: Parts of the story take place in the past of the Oblivia region. In these sections, you play as a Ranger in a different era, with access to unique Partner Pokémon like the legendary Arceus, and the gameplay shifts to focus on aerial battles on the back of a Latias or Latios.
This title expanded the Ranger series with its cooperative focus and dual-era narrative.
