About This Game

Pokemon Golden Sun Box Art

Introduction: "Pokemon Golden Sun" is not an official Pokemon title but a well-known ROM hack of Pokemon FireRed. It is set in the new region of Naljo, a land with a distinct, darker narrative tone compared to official games. The visual style retains the Generation III engine and tilesets of FireRed, with custom sprites for new characters and some areas.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game offers a unique starter choice: Eevee, which can evolve into any of its original five forms based on in-game conditions. The difficulty is notably higher than the base game, with tougher trainer AI and level curves, making it less immediately friendly for a casual Nuzlocke run. It does not include the Physical/Special split from Generation IV, nor does it add the Fairy type or Mega Evolution. It maintains the day/night cycle and other core mechanics of the FireRed engine.

Key Features:

  • A completely original region and story, where the player investigates a criminal syndicate called Team Fusion.
  • The inclusion of Pokemon from Generations I-IV, expanding the available roster far beyond FireRed's regional Pokedex.
  • Numerous scripted events and side quests that diverge significantly from the standard Pokemon gym challenge formula.
This hack is recognized for its ambitious scope and original setting within the ROM hacking community.
