About This Game

Pokemon Leaf Green Box Art

Introduction: Pokémon LeafGreen is an official Game Boy Advance title released in 2004. It is a faithful remake of the 1996 Game Boy game Pokémon Blue, set in the Kanto region. The visual style is a significant upgrade from the original, featuring full-color graphics, updated character sprites, and a more detailed overworld, while maintaining the core layout and story of the first generation.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game offers the classic Kanto starter choice of Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle. Its difficulty is standard for the main series, making it accessible for newcomers and a solid choice for self-imposed challenges like Nuzlocke runs. Mechanically, it runs on the Generation III engine, which introduced abilities, natures, and a revamped EV/IV system. It does not include the Physical/Special split (that came in Generation IV), the Fairy type, or Mega Evolution. A day/night cycle is also absent, as it was not a feature in the original Kanto games.

Key Features:

  • Sevii Islands Post-Game: After defeating the Elite Four, a substantial new post-game area opens up, allowing players to catch Pokémon from the Johto region and complete a new storyline.
  • Wireless Adapter Support: It introduced local wireless trading and battling via the Game Boy Advance Wireless Adapter, eliminating the need for a link cable.
  • Updated Movepools and Teachy TV: Pokémon have updated movesets from Generation III, and an in-game help system, the Teachy TV, provides tutorials on core mechanics for new players.
This remake successfully modernized the original adventure while adding meaningful content for returning fans.
