About This Game

Pokemon Obscure (gold hack) Box Art

Introduction: Pokemon Obscure is a ROM hack of the official Pokemon Gold for the Game Boy Color. It is not an official release. The hack takes place in the new region of Obscuria, which features a darker, more mysterious aesthetic compared to Johto, with altered maps and a custom storyline. The visual style retains the original Generation II graphics but with new sprite work for characters and some Pokemon.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The game offers a new selection of starter Pokemon, typically including Houndour, Poochyena, and Shinx, all from later generations. The difficulty is notably increased, with higher-leveled Gym Leaders and wild Pokemon, making it more challenging than the base game but not explicitly designed as a Nuzlocke. It does not implement the Physical/Special split or add the Fairy type, as it is built on the Generation II engine. However, it does retain the day/night cycle and introduces new evolution methods for certain Pokemon.

Key Features:

  • A completely new region, Obscuria, with eight new Gyms and an original villainous team.
  • An expanded Pokedex that includes Pokemon from Generations III and IV, integrated into the Johto/Kanto world.
  • Various quality-of-life improvements from later games, such as the ability to run indoors and reusable TMs.
The hack is a complete experience that offers a fresh adventure for players familiar with the classic Gold version.
