About This Game
Introduction: Pokemon Ruby 2012 is a fan-made ROM hack of the official Pokemon Ruby for the Game Boy Advance. It is not an official release. The hack retains the core Hoenn region setting and story from the original game but introduces a significant number of gameplay and content changes, primarily focused on expanding the available Pokemon roster and increasing difficulty. The visual style remains identical to the base Ruby game.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack expands the starter choices beyond the original three, offering Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle from Kanto. The difficulty is notably increased, with higher-leveled and better-equipped Gym Leaders and Elite Four members, making it less friendly for casual Nuzlocke runs. It does not implement the Physical/Special split from Generation IV, nor does it add the Fairy type or Mega Evolution. It operates on the Generation III engine, so core mechanics like Abilities and Natures function as in the original Ruby.
Key Features:
- Expanded National Pokedex: The primary feature is the inclusion of Pokemon from Generations I through IV, allowing players to catch and use species like Gible and Riolu within the Hoenn region.
- Increased Difficulty: Trainer teams, especially bosses, have higher levels, better move-sets, and hold items, providing a greater challenge than the original game.
- Modified Wild Encounters: The distribution of wild Pokemon is altered to accommodate the new species, with many areas featuring different or additional Pokemon from the expanded roster.
This hack is best suited for players familiar with Hoenn who want a more challenging experience with a much wider team-building pool.
