About This Game

Pokemon Toxic Purple (Beta V1) Box Art

Introduction: Pokémon Toxic Purple (Beta V1) is a fan-made ROM hack of the Game Boy Advance title Pokémon FireRed. It is set in the Kanto region, but with a significantly altered narrative and visual style. The hack presents a darker, more mature storyline where the player investigates a criminal syndicate's use of toxic chemicals, giving the world a distinct, grimy aesthetic that modifies many standard tiles and sprites.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The hack retains the standard Kanto starter PokémonBulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle—but features a notably higher difficulty level. Enemy trainers have stronger, more strategically built teams, making it a challenging experience that some players consider Nuzlocke-friendly due to the increased risk. Mechanically, it is built on the FireRed engine, so it does not include the Physical/Special split, the Fairy type, or Mega Evolution.

Key Features:

  • A complete narrative overhaul focusing on a toxic-waste conspiracy, with new dialogue and event scripting.
  • An expanded Pokédex that includes many Pokémon from the Johto and Hoenn regions, integrated into the Kanto map.
  • Numerous quality-of-life improvements from later hacks, such as reusable TMs and the ability to use Running Shoes indoors.

As a beta version, the game is known to contain various bugs and incomplete areas, which is typical for early-stage ROM hacks.
