About This Game

Pokemon Black Special Palace Ed. Box Art

Introduction: "Pokemon Black Special Palace Ed." is a bootleg Game Boy Color cartridge that is not a modified version of an official Pokemon game. It is a counterfeit release of the Japanese game Keitai Denjuu Telefang 2 Power Version, a monster-collecting RPG for the Game Boy Advance that is unrelated to the Pokemon franchise. The story involves contacting digital monsters called Denjuu via a cell phone, and its visual style is distinct from Pokemon, featuring different character and monster designs.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The gameplay revolves around using a cell phone interface to call Denjuu to battle. You do not choose a starter Pokemon in the traditional sense; instead, you progress by making specific phone calls to recruit monsters. The difficulty is often considered high due to poor translation and confusing mechanics imported from the original Japanese game. It does not include any standard Pokemon mechanics like the Physical/Special split or Fairy type. The battle system and stat progression are unique to the Telefang series.

Key Features:

  • Bootleg Translation: The game is infamous for its extremely poor, often nonsensical English translation, which renders the plot and many mechanics nearly incomprehensible.
  • Telefang Battle System: Battles use a system where you call Denjuu to fight for you, with mechanics centered around phone numbers and battery power instead of PP and Pokeballs.
  • Fake Pokemon: The cartridge misleadingly uses the names and sprites of official Pokemon from the first two generations, but these are crudely pasted over the original Denjuu sprites and do not reflect their actual in-game types or moves.

This cartridge is a well-known piece of bootleg history, often collected for its notoriety rather than for a quality gameplay experience.
